Mapping information includes aerial imagery, natural features and constraints, land use, roadways and recreational uses. A list of maps and links to PDF files showing details for each topic is available here:

  • Aerial Base Map
    Aerial Base Map: Shows an aerial view of the Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties.
  • Agricultural Land Cover
    Agriculture Land Cover: Shows the land cover for agricultural uses as well as the types of crops being produced.
  • Agricultural Soils
    Agricultural Soils: Shows the underlying soil types that best support agricultural production, regardless of how the land is currently used.
  • Community Features
    Community Features: Shows various Community Features in the region, including schools, libraries and police stations.
  • Constraints
    Constraints: Shows Environmental Constraints, such as floodplains, wetlands and steep slopes.
  • Critical Infrastructure
    Critical Infrastructure: Notes airports, bridges, dams and utilities.
  • Forested Areas
    Forested Areas: Shows the location of forested lands, including evergreen, deciduous or a mixture of both.
  • Geology
    Geology: Shows the different soil types and geological formations as they appear throughout the two County region.
  • Historic Features
    Historic Features: Highligths locations of historic landmarks and structures, including those listed on or eligible for the National Register.
  • Hydrologic Features
    Hydrologic Features: Shows waterways, recorded floodplains, wetlands, and hydric soils. This information is important because it identifies sensitive natural resources that serve as both a development constraint and a potential focus for natural resource conservation.
  • Existing Land Use
    Existing Land Use: Shows the current pattern of land uses such as residential, commercial, institutional, industrial, and parks. It is helpful to have a clear understanding of the current pattern of land use when considering the future.
  • Land Preservation
    Land Preservation: Shows easements that would prevent the future development of certain parcels of land.
  • Study Area Map
    Study Area Map: Shows the location of cities, boroughs, recreation facilities and roadways as they appear throughout Lackawanna and Luzerne Counties.
  • Roadway Functional Classification
    Roadway Functional Classification: Shows the intended use of roadways, whether for trips through the area (arterials) or more for local circulation (collectors and local roads).
  • Roadway Jurisdictional Classification
    Roadway Jurisdictional Classification: Shows which level of government is responsible for roadways.
  • Mining
    Mining: Shows a variety of mining information, from the location of the coal fields to mining activities.
  • Pending and Proposed
    Pending and Proposed: Shows locations of Pending and Proposed commercial, industrial, institutional, mixed-use and residential development.
  • Recent Private Development
    Recent Private Development: Indicates locations of commercial, industrial, residential, mixed-use and other development activities around the two counties.
  • Recent Public Improvements
    Recent Public Improvements: Shows transportation, institutional and recreational / protected lands in the two counties.
  • Sewer
    Sewer: Shows the regions Sewage systems, including wastewater facilities.
  • Steep Slope
    Steep Slope: Shows variations of Steep Slopes around the two-county region.
  • Transportation
    Transportation: Shows the locations of roads, bridges, railroads, airports, park and ride lots, bus stations, transit lines and other transportation facilities.
  • Trend Scenario
    Trend Scenario: Hypothesizes how development may occur throughout the two counties if development trends remain the same as they are today.
  • Utilities
    Utilities: Notes the locations of land fills, recycling centers, electric and gas service areas, and cable TV/phone companies.
  • Water
    Water: Shows the potential areas served by public and private water systems.
